Best Metal Jigs and Speed Jigs for Yellowtail Kingfish Australia (2026)

Vertical metal knife jigs and slow-pitch jigs are the most productive artificial presentations for kingfish holding on deep offshore reefs and seamounts.

High-speed vertical knife jigs ranging from 80g inshore up to 320g+ on deep seamounts are engineered with streamlined asymmetric profiles that cut through heavy oceanic currents to reach the bottom instantly.

Slow-pitch and centre-balanced jigs produce a wide, fluttering horizontal slide on the drop. This fluttering action mimics a wounded baitfish, drawing reaction strikes from non-aggressive schools.

All metal jigs must be rigged with heavy-gauge assist hooks attached via solid welded stainless rings and Kevlar assist cord. Single assist hooks dramatically reduce bottom snagging and provide direct pulling leverage.

Technical Selection Criteria

1. The Mechanical Fast-Pitch Jigging Rhythm

Drop your knife jig to the bottom. Place the rod under your arm. In a continuous, explosive rhythm, lift the rod tip 60cm while turning the reel handle one full turn, then drop the rod tip to allow the jig to dart sideways. Maintain this cadence through the bottom 30 metres of water.

2. The Slow-Pitch Lift-and-Fall

Use a slow-pitch rod with a 200g center-balanced jig. Lower the jig to the target depth. Impart a smooth, full upward sweep of the rod, then immediately lower the tip to give the line complete slack. The jig will flip horizontally and flutter like a dying baitfish.

3. Assist Hook Rigging directly to Solid Rings

Never attach assist hooks directly to a split ring. Always loop the Kevlar assist cord onto a solid welded stainless steel ring. Attach your mainline leader to the solid ring, and connect the jig via a heavy-duty split ring to the same solid ring. This ensures direct pulling pressure on the hook.
