Fishing Bundaberg & Agnes Water
Fisheries management across Bundaberg strictly enforces Queensland DAF regulations, including the annual East Coast Barramundi closure from 1 November to 1 February in tidal waters. Note that nearby Lake Monduran is a SIPS impoundment where Barramundi can be legally targeted year-round! Personal possession limits permit 5 Barramundi (minimum length 58cm, maximum 120cm) outside closure dates, alongside Great Barrier Reef Coral Reef Fin Fish closure dates around October and November full moons.
Land-based anglers enjoy exceptional infrastructure along the Burnett Heads breakwall, Port Bundaberg jetty, Agnes Water Main Beach, and 1770 headland. Casting 30g to 50g metal lures off Burnett Heads breakwall into murky estuary currents yields heavy strikes from Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, and Trevally. Meanwhile, topwater poppers worked off the crystal-clear oceanic rock ledges at 1770 Headland trigger explosive surface strikes from Spanish Mackerel, GTs, and Queenfish.
Boating fishers launching from Burnett Heads, Round Hill Creek (1770), Skyringville, or Baffle Creek cover deep river channels, mangrove estuaries, and outer Coral Sea reefs. Drifting the shallow coral gardens around Lady Musgrave Island and Lady Elliot Island in 10 to 30 metres depth accounts for heavy catches of Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Spangled Emperor, and Spanish Mackerel. Local Bait Tips
- BEACH WORMS: The expansive surf zones at Agnes Water Main Beach and nearby Rules Beach are heavily populated with beach worms. Use a bait bag containing old fish frames dragged in the retreating shore wash to lure them out, extracting with a precise two-finger pinch for top-tier Whiting bait.
- LIVE MULLET: Cast netting the lower reaches of the Burnett River, particularly around the rock walls and muddy drain run-offs during an outgoing tide, provides incredibly hardy live mullet. Essential for targeting the large resident Burnett Barramundi.
- SAND YABBIES: The exposed sand spits of Baffle Creek at dead low tide are prime yabby pumping territory. A quick session with a pump and sieve yields fantastic baits that, when fished lightly weighted, are irresistible to local Flathead and Grunter.
