Species Name: Platycephalus bassensis
Description
The Sand Flathead are also known as Bass Flathead, Yanks, Sandy, Sandy Flathead, Southern Sand Flathead and Bay Flathead. The Sand Flatheads colour is generally a sandy or light brownish on the upper back, flanks and head area’s with the belly area being white in colour. The upper body is covered in a profusion of spots that vary in colour from white to blackish also two or three bands run across the body between the head and tail. The caudal fin is distinctively coloured with one or two large black spots surrounded by white on the lower half of the fin. The Sand Flat head has two sharp spines on either side of the head with the lower spine being longer than the top spine, Care should being taken while handling these fish to avoid painful wounds from the spines. Sand Flathead can grow to approximately 3kg and 45cm.

New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
