Australian Salmon

SCI: ARRIPIS TRUTTA // SPECIES INTEL
Patrolling the high-energy surf beaches and rocky headlands of Australia's southern coastline, the Australian salmon is a premier light-tackle sportfish. Hooking these fast-swimming, acrobatic brawlers requires long-distance casting setups, high-speed metal lures, and active beach-fishing strategies.

Appearance & Identification

The Australian Salmon (Arripis trutta and Arripis saxa) possesses an elongated, torpedo-shaped body, generally silver in coloration with darker green-blue to grey dorsal surfaces. Its flanks exhibit reflective silver, often marked with indistinct dark spots or blotches arranged in horizontal rows. The fins are typically dusky or yellowish. This species features a moderately large mouth, a prominent lower jaw, and a forked caudal fin, indicative of a pelagic existence.
Juvenile specimens may display more pronounced spotting. Differentiation between species Arripis trutta (Eastern Australian Salmon) and Arripis saxa (Western Australian Salmon) is subtle and often requires examination of gill raker counts or genetic analysis. Arripis trutta is typically smaller. Both species are robust, powerful swimmers, contributing to their popular status as a recreational angling target.

Habitat & Movements

Australian Salmon are primarily found in temperate coastal waters across Southern Australia, extending from Western Australia, through South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, and New South Wales. They are a schooling species, often encountered in large aggregations, particularly during seasonal migrations. Their preferred habitats include surf zones, coastal beaches, rocky headlands, and the mouths of estuaries.
These fish frequently patrol shallow inshore areas, often congregating around areas of oceanic current flow and baitfish concentrations. They will enter estuarine systems, particularly during cooler months or when pursuing prey. Deep offshore reefs are not their primary habitat; instead, they are predominantly a nearshore, pelagic species, preferring oxygen-rich, turbulent waters.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods A 2-6 kg (4-12 lb) spin rod with a fast action, approximately 7 to 9 feet in length, is appropriate for general shore-based and light boat angling.
  • Reels A 2500-4000 size spin reel with a smooth drag system is recommended for effective line management and fighting capability.
  • Line & Leader 10-20 lb braided main line with a 15-30 lb fluorocarbon leader, approximately 1-2 meters in length, is suitable for abrasion resistance and reduced visibility.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials 1. Metal Slugs/Slices: 20-40 gram, silver or chrome finish. 2. Soft Plastics: 3-5 inch jerk shads or paddle tails, natural baitfish colors.
  • Live & Cut Baits 1. Pilchards (whole or cut segments). 2. Whitebait or small local baitfish.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling N/A - Not a primary trolling target. Australian Salmon are more effectively pursued via casting and retrieving techniques.
  • Drifting & Jigging When targeting from a boat or kayak in estuaries or near headlands, deploy unweighted or lightly weighted pilchards or whitebait to drift naturally with the current. Maintain minimal slack line to detect subtle strikes.
  • Fly Fishing Utilize 8-10 weight fly rods with an intermediate or fast-sinking fly line. Cast large baitfish imitations such as Clouser Minnows or Surf Candies in white, chartreuse, or blue/white color combinations. Employ a rapid, strip retrieve to elicit strikes.

  • South Australia (SA) (2025): No minimum size. Bag limit: 20 per person.
  • Northern Territory (NT): Not present in Northern Territory waters.
  • Tasmania (TAS) (2025): No minimum size. Bag limit: 10 per person.

Please check official state fisheries websites for real-time updates.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Observe the water for surface activity such as diving birds or splashing baitfish, which often indicates the presence of actively feeding Australian Salmon.
  • Eating Qualities Australian Salmon possess darker, oilier flesh, which is generally not preferred for raw consumption or pan-frying by some palates. It is highly suitable for smoking, making fish cakes, or use in curries where the stronger flavor is complemented. Prompt bleeding and icing are critical post-capture to optimize flesh quality.
