Appearance & Identification
Small, robust, pale cream-to-pinkish body covered in a fine, velvety fuzz (hence ‘greasyback’) and numerous, small brown spots. They have a short, straight rostrum. Commonly caught between 5cm and 8cm, reaching up to 10cm.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed along the eastern coast of Australia, from northern Queensland down through New South Wales to eastern Victoria. They prefer muddy estuary flats, coastal bays, mangrove creeks, and tidal lagoons in depths from 0.5m to 15m.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Bay prawns are highly abundant and easy to target in shallow waters. Look for their bright green eyes reflecting in the dark; they are highly sensitive and will jump backward instantly when startled.
- Eating Qualities Good eating quality. Features delicate, sweet, and soft white meat. Best prepared by flash-frying whole in garlic and olive oil for 1 to 2 minutes, or quick-boiling in salted water.
