Blackspotted Rockcod

SCI: EPINEPHELUS MALABARICUS // SPECIES INTEL
A legendary, heavy-bodied demersal brawler of northern Australia's tropical reefs and mangrove channels, the blackspotted rockcod (Malabar cod) is an elite target. Reaching massive proportions, landing these rock-dwelling giants requires heavy-duty tackle, whole baits, and stopping them early before they retreat into deep reef caves.

Appearance & Identification

Robust, thick-set body with a broad, flat head and a massive mouth lined with small, sharp teeth. They are olive-grey to brown on the back with irregular dark bands across the body, immediately distinguished by being covered in numerous small, dark black spots (unlike the orange/gold spots of the goldspotted cod) and irregular white splotches. Commonly caught between 40cm and 80cm, with mature specimens growing to over 2m and weighing up to 150kg.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed widely across the tropical waters of northern Australia, from Western Australia’s Gascoyne coast, around the Top End, to southern Queensland. They prefer coral reefs, rocky ledges, muddy estuary channels, and mangrove swamps in depths from 1m to 150m.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Heavy-duty spinning or overhead rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for PE 4 to PE 6 lines to handle powerful demersal runs.
  • Reels High-capacity, robust 6000 to 10000 size spinning reel or a strong overhead reel with at least 10kg of carbon fiber drag.
  • Line & Leader 20kg to 30kg (40lb to 60lb) braided main line with a 2m leader of 60lb to 100lb hard-shell fluorocarbon to resist reef friction.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to large soft plastic paddle tails (6 to 8-inch) on heavy-gauge jig heads, and deep-diving minnow hardbodies. Natural gold, pink/white, or silver-blue patterns are deadly.
  • Live & Cut Baits Whole live mullet, yellowtail scad, rock crabs, or fresh octopus. Present baits on a heavy-gauge 7/0 to 9/0 circle hook fished on a running sinker or paternoster rig.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling Slow-trolling deep-diving minnow hardbodies at 2 to 4 knots along deep reef ledges, rocky drop-offs, and shipping channels.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting over isolated coral bomboras, deep channels, or rubble beds, keeping baits positioned close to the seafloor.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

QLD: Minimum size limit is 38cm, maximum size limit is 120cm. Combined daily bag limit of 5 for all cod and grouper species.
NT: Daily bag limit of 5 (combined cod species). All cod over 120cm are protected and must be released.
WA: Minimum size limit is 40cm, maximum size limit is 100cm. Daily bag limit of 2 (part of the demersal species limit).
NSW: Daily bag limit of 20 (general unlisted species limit). No minimum size limit applies.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Blackspotted rockcod are highly structure-associated. Once hooked, they will make a desperate, incredibly powerful run directly back into the nearest reef cave or hollow log. Lock your drag and lift the rod high to stop them early.
  • Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features sweet, pristine white, firm, and flaky meat with a moist texture. Excellent prepared as pan-fried fillets, baked whole, or steamed. Bleed immediately on capture.
