Appearance & Identification

Features a robust, thick-set, streamlined body of a dark bluish-green to charcoal back with silver sides, immediately identified by a high, prominent, non-scaled lateral line that waves downwards, and massive, white cone-shaped teeth that resemble a dog’s. Commonly caught between 80cm and 130cm, weighing up to 30kg, with the capacity to exceed 2m and 100kg.

Habitat & Movements

Tropical waters of northern Australia, ranging from the Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, around the Top End, to Western Australia’s offshore reefs (such as Rowley Shoals). They prefer current-swept deep reef walls, underwater canyons, and steep continental shelf drop-offs in depths from 10m to 150m.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Heavy PE 6 to PE 10 overhead or spinning jigging rod of 1.6m to 1.8m, built with an exceptionally strong backbone to withstand intense vertical pressure.
  • Reels High-capacity, powerful 10000 to 20000 size heavy spinning reels or overhead game reels delivering at least 15kg to 20kg of smooth carbon drag.
  • Line & Leader 24kg to 45kg (50lb to 100lb) braided main line with a 5m shock leader of 80lb to 130lb monofilament or fluorocarbon to cushion violent, deep runs.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to heavy metal jigs (150g to 350g) worked with high-pitch mechanical jigging, and large sinking stickbaits (18cm to 25cm) in chrome, pink, or natural baitfish patterns.
  • Live & Cut Baits Whole live fusiliers, yellowtail scad, or fresh whole squid on a heavy-gauge 8/0 to 10/0 circle or J-hook snelled to a short wire or heavy monofilament leader.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting over deep reef edges or underwater pinnacles while letting heavy jigs or live baits drop down the current lines, keeping your line as vertical as possible.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

QLD: No minimum size limit. General tidal species possession limit of 20 applies.
NSW: Daily bag limit of 2 per person (combined with other tuna). No minimum size limit applies.
WA: Daily bag limit of 2 per person (part of the pelagic species limit). No minimum size limit applies.
NT: Combined daily bag limit of 5. Combined possession limit of 15.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Dogtooth tuna are notorious reef brawlers; they will make an incredibly fast, near-unstoppable first run directly over deep reef drops to cut your line. Ensure the skipper is ready to steer the boat into open, deep water immediately upon hook-up.
  • Eating Qualities Moderate to good table quality. Features very firm, dense, meaty white flesh that is slightly dry. Best prepared fresh as sashimi or grilled/barbecued with marinades. Bleed immediately on capture.
