Appearance & Identification

Large, translucent, pale yellow-to-brown body with a blue-tipped tail (uropod) and cream-colored legs. They possess a long, upwardly curved rostrum (head spike) with prominent teeth. Adults are massive, frequently exceeding 15cm to 25cm in total length.

Habitat & Movements

Coastal waters and deep sandy estuaries along the eastern coast of Australia, from Queensland down to eastern Victoria. They prefer deep sandy or muddy bottoms in depths from 1m to over 200m, moving into shallow estuary channels as juveniles.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Nets & Traps: Hand-held dip nets, pocket nets, or cast nets (up to 3.7m radius in Queensland). In New South Wales, hand-hauled prawn nets (up to 6m) or push nets are also popular in designated waters.
  • Reels Accessory Gear: High-intensity underwater LED lights, headlamps, floating catch buckets, and fine sorting trays to separate prawns from by-catch.
  • Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Hand-held net frames, float cords, and net drawstrings. No standard fishing lines apply.

  • Artificials Attractants & Scents: Light & Luminescence. Strong underwater lights are the primary attractant used to locate their bright orange eyes reflecting in the dark.

NSW: Daily bag limit of 10 litres in total (all prawn species combined). No minimum size limit applies.
QLD: Daily possession limit of 10 litres per person (or 20 litres per boat with 2 or more people). No minimum size limit applies. Heads or shells must not be removed on board.
VIC: Daily combined limit of 5 litres per person. No minimum size limit.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Eastern king prawns are highly active and will jump backward with immense speed when startled by light. Always position your dip net behind the prawn's tail, then gently touch its nose to make it jump directly into the net.
  • Eating Qualities World-class seafood. Features firm, sweet, rich meat with a distinct lobster-like texture. Best prepared whole by boiling in heavily salted water for 2 to 3 minutes until they turn bright orange, then plunging into an ice bath.
