Appearance & Identification
These highly streamlined, long-bodied fish are instantly recognized by their brilliant mirror-like silver flanks, deep blue dorsal surface, and highly prominent, razor-sharp fangs. They possess a long, single pelvic spine and two separate dorsal fins with the second followed by two small finlets near the tail. Their eyes are exceptionally large and gold-ringed, perfectly adapted for detecting tiny bioluminescent organisms and prey in the absolute darkness of the abyss. Adult specimens commonly reach lengths of 70cm to 100cm, though trophy fish can exceed 1.2m and weigh over 15kg on heavy tackle.
Habitat & Movements
Gemfish are native to the cool, temperate offshore waters and deep marine canyons of southern Australia from New South Wales down to Western Australia. They are highly structure-dependent ocean travelers, preferring deep gravel beds, reef edges, and mud-basin drop-offs in depths ranging from 150m to over 600m. They follow cool ocean currents and rich zooplankton blooms in search of massive schools of squid, krill, and deepwater warehou. Their populations are heavily concentrated around deep water canyons, offshore seamounts, and continental shelf drops during winter spawning migrations.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Utilize a specialized, heavy-duty 1.5m to 1.8m deep-drop rod rated between 24kg and 37kg. This rod must feature a highly rigid, unyielding blank equipped with a heavy-duty roller tip guide to handle the immense pressure of winding up heavy weights from depth.
