Appearance & Identification
Robust, thick-set body with a broad head, large mouth, and small, sharp teeth. They are light brownish-grey with a series of irregular, dark brown bands across their body, and are covered in numerous, small orange-to-golden-brown spots. Commonly caught between 40cm and 70cm, but can exceed 1.2m and weigh over 30kg.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed across the warm tropical and subtropical waters of northern Australia, from Western Australia’s Gascoyne coast, around the Top End, to northern New South Wales. They prefer mangrove-lined estuaries, deep muddy channels, rocky ledges, and offshore coral reefs in depths from 1m to 100m.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Heavy spinning or overhead rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for 15kg to 24kg (30lb to 50lb) line classes to handle powerful demersal runs.
- Reels Robust 4000 to 6000 size spinning reel or a strong overhead reel with at least 8kg of carbon fiber drag to stop their initial runs.
- Line & Leader 15kg to 24kg braided main line with a 2m leader of 40lb to 80lb hard-shell monofilament or fluorocarbon to resist reef friction.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Highly responsive to large soft plastic paddle tails (5 to 7-inch) on heavy jig heads, and deep-diving minnow hardbodies. Red/white, gold, or silver-blue patterns are highly effective.
- Live & Cut Baits Whole live mullet, yellowtail, or active sand crabs. Present baits on a heavy-gauge 6/0 to 8/0 circle hook fished on a running sinker or float rig.
Field Tactics
- Trolling Slow-trolling deep-diving minnow hardbodies at 2 to 4 knots along deep estuary rock walls, bridge structures, or reef ledges.
- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over muddy channel beds, gravel rises, or low-relief rocky structures, keeping your bait positioned close to the bottom where they ambush prey.

State Legal Limits
QLD: Minimum size limit is 38cm, maximum size limit is 120cm. Combined daily bag limit of 5 for all cod and grouper species.
NSW: Daily bag limit of 20 per person (general unlisted species limit). No minimum size limit applies.
WA: Minimum size limit is 40cm, maximum size limit is 100cm. Daily bag limit of 2 (part of the demersal species limit).
NT: Daily bag limit of 5 (combined cod species). All cod over 120cm are protected and must be released.
Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Goldspotted cod are highly territorial, holding tightly to their favorite caves or logs. If you get bricked (reefed) by a cod, keep a light tension on the line and wait; they will often swim back out of the cave after a few minutes, allowing you to extract them.
- Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features pristine, sweet, exceptionally white, and firm meat that flakes beautifully. Ideal for baking whole, pan-searing, or steaming. Always bleed on capture.
