Appearance & Identification
These spectacular, highly compressed fish are easily identified by their exceptionally long, ribbon-like bodies that completely lack scales and present a brilliant mirror-like silver chrome finish. They possess an incredibly strong, prominent jaw armed with multiple rows of fine, razor-sharp fangs designed for firmly securing active baitfish. Their dorsal fin runs continuously along the entire length of their back, tapering down to a fine, hair-like tail filament. Adult specimens can reach massive proportions, commonly growing to over 1.5m in length and exceeding 5kg in deep rocky estuaries.
Habitat & Movements
Hairtail are native to the cool, temperate coastal bays and deep, sheltered estuaries of eastern Australia, particularly Cowan Creek in Sydney. They prefer deep, quiet river pools that contain plenty of soft mud and deep rock walls in depths ranging from ten to over forty meters. They are highly active during the night, rising from the deep mud basins to forage along the steep rock walls and pontoon structures. During the winter, they actively patrol the deep estuarine reaches, while the summer months see them retreat into deeper offshore waters.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Utilize a medium to fast-action, highly sensitive 2.1m to 2.4m spinning rod rated between 3kg and 6kg. This rod length provides the exceptional casting distance needed to cast light, unweighted baits far out into the deep channels. A highly sensitive tip section is crucial to feel the subtle, tentative weights of a hairtail taking a bait.
- Reels Pair your light rod with a smooth, high-quality 2500 to 3500 size spinning reel. The reel must possess a minimum of 4kg of smooth carbon fiber drag to prevent tearing their soft mouths during a fight. A retrieve ratio of five to one is perfect for maintaining a slow, natural retrieve speed with light rigs.
- Line & Leader Utilize 4kg to 6kg braided main line to guarantee zero stretch and maximum sensitivity over deep pools. Couple this with a long, 2m leader of 6kg to 8kg hard-shell fluorocarbon attached to a short, 15cm trace of multi-strand wire to prevent bite-offs from their fangs. It is crucial to check your leader regularly for knicks or frays after landing a fish.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Lure fishing is highly unproductive for hairtail as they are slow-moving, scent-driven benthic foragers. Trying to cast or retrieve artificial hardbodies, soft plastics, or metal jigs will rarely draw a strike from these slow-moving estuary predators. Anglers must focus exclusively on natural, scent-dense baiting methods using fresh, highly fragrant baits.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh, whole gany pilchards, whole garfish, or fresh slimy mackerel strips are the standout natural presentations. Present these baits on a specialized multi-hook gang rig using chemically sharpened size 1/0 to 2/0 hooks to ensure a secure hook-up. Fish these baits with minimal weight along the deep rocky walls during the night to maximize your chances.
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over deep, muddy channels while slowly bouncing baits along the bottom is a highly productive method. Position your boat up-wind of the target channel and allow the natural drift to carry your presentations. Keep your reel engaged and maintain a tight line to instantly feel the heavy, solid thud of a hairtail taking the bait.
- Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes The absolute secret to success is targeting the slow-flowing river pools during the peak of a warm, humid summer night just before a storm. Hairtail are highly sensitive to barometric pressure and feed aggressively under these low-light, pre-storm conditions. Always check your local state laws closely, as strict bag limits and gear restrictions apply to protect local waterways. Clean your gear thoroughly with fresh water after every session to prevent mud build-up on your light drags.
- Eating Qualities Hairtail possess exceptionally firm, sweet white meat with a clean, delicate flavor and high oil content that is regarded as reasonable eating when prepared fresh. However, they must be skinned and filleted carefully to remove the tough skin and fine bones before cooking. Fillet the sweet meat carefully and pan-fry in hot butter and garlic.
