Appearance & Identification
Streamlined, moderately deep body covered in slightly rough, finely ctenoid scales. They are bright silver with vertical rows of golden-bronze spots on their upper flanks and prominent black tips on their tail fin. They are distinguished from juvenile Australian salmon by their noticeably larger eyes and rounded head. Commonly caught between 20cm and 25cm, reaching up to 41cm.
Habitat & Movements
Cool temperate waters of southern Australia, ranging from the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, around Tasmania and South Australia, to Shark Bay in Western Australia. They prefer sheltered estuaries, sandy bays, coastal beaches, and rocky headland washes.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Ultra-light, highly sensitive spinning rod of 2.1m to 2.4m, rated for line classes between 1kg and 3kg, offering excellent sensitivity.
- Reels Smooth, light 1000 to 2000 size spinning reel with a fluid drag system to handle their rapid, vibrating runs.
- Line & Leader 1.5kg to 3kg braided main line with a 2m leader of 4lb to 6lb fluorocarbon to remain invisible in clear, shallow waters.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Highly responsive to small metal slugs (5g to 15g), micro-hardbodies, and small soft plastics (1.5 to 2-inch grubs) worked rapidly through the water.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh maggots (gents), peeled prawns, or beach worms. Present these baits under a weighted casting float (such as a 'block' float loaded with wet berley paste).
Field Tactics

- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over shallow seagrass flats, letting light baits float naturally through the current wash.
- Fly Fishing Light 4-weight fly rod with a floating line, casting small flash-heavy wet flies or micro-streamers.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Easily confused with juvenile Australian salmon; check for the black tail tips and rough scales of the Tommy Ruff. Keep a steady berley trail of wet breadcrumbs or tuna oil flowing to hold the school close.
- Eating Qualities Good eating quality when prepared fresh. Features sweet, slightly oily grey-white meat with a fine texture. Best prepared by bleeding immediately on capture, keeping on ice, filleting, and pan-frying, or hot-smoking.
