Appearance & Identification
These solid, robust fish are easily identified by their highly elongated, tapered bodies covered in a thick layer of protective slime and tiny, embedded scales. They possess a pinkish-orange to mottled brown body coloration marked with distinct dark grey blotches. Their mouth is exceptionally large and cavernous, armed with multiple rows of fine, sharp teeth designed for firmly clamping onto deepwater crabs, squid, and fish. Pink ling are native to the cool, temperate offshore waters and deep marine canyons of southern Australia from New South Wales down to Western Australia. They are intensely structure-dependent bottom dwellers, preferring deep gravel beds, rocky ledges, and soft mud-basin drop-offs in depths ranging from one hundred to over five hundred meters. They use their long, slimy bodies to slip inside narrow rock crevices and deep mud burrows to escape predators. During the winter spawning season, they form large, dense schools around deep offshore pinnacles and steep continental shelf drops.
