These native, deep-bodied fish are easily identified by their solid, dark grey-black to purplish-brown body coloration and highly prominent, large eyes. They possess a rounded head profile with a small, slightly underslung mouth armed with fine, crushing teeth designed for feeding on aquatic insects. Their tails are broad and slightly rounded, providing the sudden explosive bursts of speed needed to retreat instantly into deep timber. Adult specimens in deep lakes can reach lengths of thirty-five to fifty centimeters, though river populations generally average twenty-five to thirty-five centimeters.

Macquarie perch are native to the cool, fast-flowing upland streams and deep reservoirs of the southern Murray-Darling basin.
