Appearance & Identification

An exceptionally clean, long-snouted reef fish with a bright silver-to-olive-grey body. They are named for the distinctive, vivid red coloration inside their mouth (hence ‘redthroat’) and around the base of their pectoral fins and eyes. They lack scales on their face, helping to distinguish them from other look-alike emperors. Commonly encountered between 35cm and 55cm, they can grow up to 65cm in length and weigh up to 4kg.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed across the warm tropical and subtropical waters of northern Australia, ranging from Western Australia’s Coral Coast, around the Top End, and down through the Great Barrier Reef to northern New South Wales. They prefer outer reef slopes, deep sandy channels adjacent to coral bomboras, and extensive gravel beds in depths from 10m to 120m.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Utilize a medium-heavy, fast-action overhead or spinning rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for PE 3 to PE 5 lines. The rod requires a highly responsive tip to register fast bottom bites, combined with a powerful butt section to turn fish away from coral edges.
  • Reels Pair your rod with a robust overhead reel or a high-performance 5000 to 8000 size spinning reel. A rapid retrieve ratio is highly advantageous for pulling fish out of the structure quickly, backed by a smooth carbon drag rated to at least 10kg.
  • Line & Leader Spool with 15kg to 24kg (30lb to 50lb) braided line to ensure zero stretch and maximum sensitivity in deep water. Couple this braid with a long, 3m leader of 40lb to 60lb hard-shell fluorocarbon to resist abrasion against sharp coral shelves.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to vertical micro-jigs (40g to 100g), slow-pitch jigs, and 5 to 7-inch soft plastic paddle tails rigged on heavy-gauge jig heads. Work these lures with a sharp, hopping motion directly off the sandy margins of deep reef structures.
  • Live & Cut Baits Fresh, oily fish bait is the standout natural presentation. Use whole large squid, fresh pilchards, bonito slabs, or fillet strips of mullet on a single or double-snelled 6/0 to 8/0 circle hook rig, kept close to the bottom.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting over deep-water rubble lines and low-profile reef systems is exceptionally productive. Position your boat up-drift of the target structure, letting your heavy terminal rig or slow-pitch jig bounce naturally along the sand-reef interface.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Redthroat emperor are highly gregarious and school in large numbers. If you locate a patch of fish, mark the GPS coordinates immediately, as you can easily catch multiple fish in a single drift. Use a release weight to combat barotrauma when returning undersized fish.
  • Eating Qualities Highly regarded as one of the finest table fish in tropical waters. Features clean, firm, sweet white meat with a small, delicate flake. Excellent when baked whole, steamed with soy and ginger, or filleted and lightly pan-seared in butter. Always bleed on capture.
