Appearance & Identification

An oval-shaped, highly robust marine gastropod with a rough, heavily textured shell displaying a distinct spiral pattern and 4 to 6 open respiratory pores. The interior of the shell is lined with highly iridescent mother-of-pearl (nacre). The muscular foot is strong, with a dark green-to-brown margin. They are the smallest of the targeted abalone species, typically measuring between 6cm and 8cm in shell length.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed from Shark Bay in Western Australia south around to western Victoria. They cling tightly to limestone reefs, intertidal wave platforms, and shallow rocky crevices, thriving in high-energy, wave-swept zones from the shallow subtidal mark down to 3m depth.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Nets & Traps: A blunt-edged, flat abalone iron or lever tool. Sharp knives or screwdrivers are strictly prohibited, as abalone are hemophiliacs and a single cut to their muscular foot will cause them to bleed to death.
  • Reels Accessory Gear: A precise, pre-set abalone measuring gauge to verify legal size before removing the shell from the rock, a heavy-duty mesh catch bag, and non-slip rock-boots.
  • Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Safety float lines and quick-release catch bag clips. No standard fishing lines are used.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials NOT APPLICABLE
  • Live & Cut Baits NOT APPLICABLE

Field Tactics

  • Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
  • Drifting & Jigging Soak Times & Tides: Strictly harvested during low-water spring tides when wave platforms are exposed. In Western Australia, harvesting is limited to highly regulated, one-hour summer sessions to protect breeding stocks.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

WA: Minimum size limit is 60mm shell length. Daily bag limit of 15 in the West Coast Zone (strictly controlled seasonal hours apply), and 20 in the Southern Zone.
SA: Minimum size limit is 6.5cm (varies by zone). Daily bag limit of 5.
VIC/NSW/TAS/QLD/NT: Not commonly targeted or different abalone species apply.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Compliance is heavily patrolled. Always measure the shell *on the rock* before popping it off. Shucking abalone in the water or on the beach is strictly illegal; they must be landed whole in their shells to allow fisheries officers to inspect size and bag limits.
  • Eating Qualities Highly prized delicacy. Features firm, sweet meat. Shuck the abalone from the shell, trim the dark outer fringes, and tenderize the muscular meat thoroughly with a mallet. Slice thinly and quick-sear in a hot pan with butter and garlic for no more than 30 seconds.
