Appearance & Identification

Features a highly robust, deep-bodied shape with a distinctively blunt head profile. They are olive-green to bronze-brown on the back, fading to silvery-white on the flanks, and often show a dark diagonal band running through the eye. Often confused with yellowtail kingfish, they are much deeper-bodied and lack yellow fins. Adult specimens regularly exceed 1m in length and can weigh up to 40kg.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed through the temperate waters of southern Australia, ranging from southern Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia. They congregate in massive spawning schools around deep-water reefs, wrecks, and rocky pinnacles in depths of 30m to 150m, with famous summer aggregations occurring off Rottnest Island (WA).

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Utilize a heavy-duty, fast-recovery overhead or spinning jigging rod of 1.6m to 1.8m, rated for PE 5 to PE 8 line classes. The rod blank must possess an incredibly powerful lower section to lift heavy fish off deep wrecks.
  • Reels Pair your rod with a high-speed, high-capacity overhead reel or a powerful 10000 to 20000 size heavy spinning reel. The reel must deliver at least 15kg of smooth, fade-free carbon drag to halt their initial, desperate reef-bound runs.
  • Line & Leader Spool with 24kg to 37kg (50lb to 80lb) braided line to eliminate stretch in deep water. Connect this to a long 5m shock leader of 80lb to 100lb monofilament or fluorocarbon to survive contact with sharp, barnacle-encrusted structures.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Extremely responsive to long, slender metal jigs (150g to 300g) worked with a fast, high-pitch mechanical jigging action. Large soft plastic paddle tails rigged on heavy-gauge jig heads also trigger strikes when worked off the bottom.
  • Live & Cut Baits Whole live squid, slimy mackerel, and yellowtail scad are the standout natural presentations. Rig live baits on a heavy-gauge 8/0 to 10/0 circle hook or a two-hook snood rig, fished with a heavy sliding sinker directly over deep structures.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling While primarily targeted with jigs or live baits, they can be taken by trolling deep-diving, bibbed minnows or large bibless lures at 6 to 8 knots along deep reef walls and drop-offs. Run lures far back in the wash to clear engine noise.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drift with a live bait suspended 5m to 15m off the bottom directly over deep-water wrecks or rock pinnacles. Keep a close eye on your sounder to monitor structure rises, adjusting your depth to keep the bait in the strike zone.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

NSW: Daily bag limit of 5 per person, no minimum size limit.
VIC: Daily bag limit of 5 per person, no minimum size limit.
SA: Daily bag limit of 5 per person, no minimum size limit.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes The absolute secret to stopping giant 'Samboes' is using your boat's engine power. Once a fish hooks up over a deep wreck, have the skipper immediately drive the boat forward into open, sand-bottom water to drag the fish away from the structure before it can cut you off.
  • Eating Qualities Moderate eating quality. Possesses dense, firm, dark flesh that can be slightly dry if overcooked. They are best prepared by bleeding immediately on capture, keeping on ice, and removing the dark lateral bloodline before cooking. Best suited to curries, smoking, or strong marinades.
