Appearance & Identification
This stunning crustacean is easily identified by its vibrant, mottled blue and grey carapace, though the females generally present in more subdued, sandy-brown tones. They are armed with exceptionally long, slender, and needle-sharp front chelae that are incredibly fast and aggressive when provoked. The outer margins of their carapace are lined with sharp, jagged points terminating in a single, extremely long lateral spine on each side. Their rearmost pair of legs are distinctly flattened into efficient swimming paddles, allowing them to glide rapidly through the water column with surprising agility.
Habitat & Movements
Sand crabs inhabit a vast array of coastal environments, heavily favoring clean, sandy bottoms, extensive seagrass meadows, and the drop-offs of deep estuarine channels. In Moreton Bay, they are prolific across the Rous Channel, the massive sand flats of the Maroon and Amity banks, and the shallow weed beds off Wellington Point. They are highly active scavengers that utilize the tidal currents to carry the scent of food across the sweeping bay flats. During the warmer summer months, they push inshore in massive numbers to forage and mate in the shallow, sun-warmed estuarine bays.
Tactical Loadout

Success is dictated purely by deploying potent, oily natural baits into the center of the trap to draw them in from the surrounding flats.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh, oily fish frames are the absolute premier bait for drawing sand crabs quickly into a trap. Whole mullet heads, pilchards, and leftover frames from filleted reef fish are exceptionally productive choices. The bait must be secured tightly to the bottom-center of the pot using a sturdy bait clip or enclosed within a mesh bait bag to prevent the crabs from shredding it instantly.

- Field Notes Space your crab pots effectively along the edge of a prominent sandbank drop-off, ensuring you cover different depth zones to locate the main moving school. When using open-top drop nets or dillies, you must check them rapidly every 30 to 45 minutes, as the crabs will easily eat the bait and swim away if left too long. Always pull the retrieval rope quickly and with smooth, continuous momentum to pin the crabs against the bottom mesh of the net. Never drop pots in active navigation channels, and always ensure your pots have the legally required escape gaps fitted to allow juvenile crabs to exit freely.

Put the live crabs to sleep humanely by submerging them in an ice-cold freshwater or saltwater slurry for twenty minutes before cooking.
