Appearance & Identification
Features an oval-shaped, highly compressed body of an olive-grey to bluish-black coloration, with a distinctive row of five to six sharp, raised black plates or ‘sawtails’ on each side of the tail base. They have a small, downward-facing mouth with fine teeth designed for grazing algae. Commonly caught between 35cm and 55cm, they can grow up to 70cm in length and weigh up to 3kg.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed along the eastern coast of Australia, from northern Queensland down through New South Wales to southern Victoria. They prefer highly turbulent, oxygenated wash zones near rocky coastal headlands, inshore reefs, and shallow ocean ledges rich with benthic algae.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Utilize a long, powerful rock spinning rod of 2.7m to 3.6m, rated for line classes between 6kg and 10kg. The extra length is critical to clear sharp rock ledges and maintain control of the fish in rolling surf washes.
- Reels Pair your rod with a robust, smooth 3000 to 4500 size spinning reel. A reel with a powerful, consistent carbon fiber drag is essential to stop their hard, circular runs from reaching deep reef crevices.
- Line & Leader Spool with 6kg to 10kg braided main line or heavy monofilament. Connect this to a long, 3m leader of 8kg to 12kg hard-shell fluorocarbon to resist abrasion against barnacle-encrusted ocean rocks.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials NOT APPLICABLE
- Live & Cut Baits Green cabbage weed or sea lettuce rigged on a small size 4 to 8 hook. Suspend the weed bait under a sensitive luderick-style float, adjusting the depth to match where the surgeonfish are feeding in the wash.
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging NOT APPLICABLE
- Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE
State Legal Limits
NSW: Daily bag limit of 5 per person. No minimum size limit applies.
QLD: General possession limit of 20 applies. No minimum size limit applies.
VIC/TAS/SA/WA: General scale fish limits apply.
Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes The tail spines are razor-sharp and can inflict deep, painful lacerations; always handle with thick, protective gloves or a heavy wet towel. Sawtail are most commonly caught as by-catch by anglers targeting luderick or black drummer in the ocean wash.
- Eating Qualities Moderate eating quality. Their herbivorous diet can cause the flesh to smell strongly of weed if not handled correctly. They are best prepared by bleeding immediately on capture, filleting, removing the dark lateral skin, and pan-frying fresh with herbs.
