Appearance & Identification
Small, translucent body covered in numerous, tiny green-brown spots and markings, with a distinctly pale, cream-colored tail and legs. They have a short, slightly curved rostrum. Commonly caught between 6cm and 10cm, reaching up to 13cm.

Distributed along the eastern coast of Australia, from southern Queensland, down through New South Wales, to eastern Victoria. They prefer muddy estuary beds, coastal lagoons, and brackish river pools, migrating out to sea to spawn as they reach maturity.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Nets & Traps: Hand-held dip nets, hand-hauled drag nets, or scissors/push nets (up to 2.75m lead line in NSW). Cast nets are highly effective where legally permitted.
- Reels Accessory Gear: Underwater LED lights, headlamps, floating catch buckets, and fine sorting trays to separate prawns from by-catch.
- Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Net drawstrings, lead weights, and float lines. No standard fishing lines apply.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Attractants & Scents: Light & Luminescence. Strong underwater lights are the primary attractant used to spot their bright green eyes reflecting in the dark.
- Live & Cut Baits NOT APPLICABLE
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Soak Times & Tides: Target the dark of the moon (new moon phase) during the run-out tide on warm summer nights when prawns emerge from the mud to migrate.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes School prawns are highly abundant and easy to target in shallow waters. Look for their bright green eyes reflecting in the dark; they are highly sensitive and will jump backward instantly when startled.
- Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features highly delicate, sweet, and soft white meat with a mild flavor. Best prepared by flash-frying whole in garlic and olive oil for 2 minutes, or quick-boiling in salted water.
