Appearance & Identification
Slender, streamlined grey-brown body with a pale-to-white belly, a long, translucent snout, and large glassy eyes. The tail fin features a distinctively large upper lobe with a large, triangular terminal notch. They can grow up to 1.7m in length and weigh over 30kg.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed through southern Australia’s cool, temperate waters, from northern NSW, around Victoria and Tasmania, to Western Australia. They prefer deep gravel flats, continental shelf edges, and sandy bays in depths from 10m to over 200m.

- Rods Heavy-action overhead or spinning rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for 15kg to 24kg line classes to handle deep-water weights and heavy head shakes.
- Reels Powerful overhead game reel or a robust 8000 to 10000 size spinning reel with a smooth, heavy drag system.
- Line & Leader 15kg to 24kg braided or monofilament line, connected to a long, 3m leader of 80lb to 100lb monofilament. While wire is sometimes used, heavy monofilament is often preferred to encourage more hook-ups.

- Live & Cut Baits Oily, fresh fish fillets are highly superior. Use whole squid, fresh salmon slabs, trevally heads, or mullet fillets on a single 8/0 to 10/0 circle hook rig.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Often confused with gummy sharks; school sharks are identified by their sharp, triangular teeth (gummy sharks have flat, crushing plates) and translucent snout. Always handle larger sharks with care and dispatch humanely.
- Eating Qualities Excellent table fish. Marketed commercially as 'flake', they feature firm, boneless, mild-flavored white meat that is perfect for classic fish and chips, baking, or frying. Bleed immediately and remove the skin.
