Appearance & Identification
Features a deeply oval, highly compressed body with a small head and a downward-slanting mouth. They are a uniform blue-grey on the back with silver-blue flanks, and mature fish display a distinctive yellow mark on their bottom jaw and below the eye. Commonly grow to 35cm-45cm, reaching up to 60cm and 3kg.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed across the cool temperate waters of southern Australia, ranging from northern New South Wales, around Victoria and Tasmania, to Western Australia. They prefer deep rocky washes, coastal reefs, and wave-swept headlands in depths from 2m to 25m, feeding on plankton and algae in high-energy surge zones.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Utilize a long, light-action spinning rod of 2.7m to 3.2m, rated for line classes between 3kg and 5kg. The extra rod length is critical for lifting lines clear of sharp rock ledges and absorbing the swell movement.
- Reels Pair your rod with a light, smooth 2500 to 3500 size spinning reel. Ensure the reel features a smooth, consistent drag to prevent light leaders from snapping when the sweep runs deep into the kelp.
- Line & Leader Spool with 4kg to 6kg braided main line or monofilament. Connect this to a long, 2.5m leader of 4kg to 6kg fluorocarbon to remain completely invisible in clear, bubbly rock washes.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Rarely taken on lures. However, they can occasionally be coaxed with small micro-jigs (5g to 10g) worked with a rapid, erratic retrieving motion through deep ocean washes.
- Live & Cut Baits Small peeled prawns, cunjevoi, bread dough, or small strips of fresh squid. Present these baits on a small, strong size 6 to 8 hook to match their small, delicate mouths.
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Let your float or unweighted bait drift naturally through rock gutters and washes. Throw small, frequent handfuls of wet bread berley into the current to attract the school and draw them close to the surface.

SA: Minimum size limit is 24cm. Daily bag limit of 20 (Spencer Gulf/other waters), 10 (Gulf St Vincent/Kangaroo Island).
TAS: No minimum size limit. Daily bag limit of 5 per person, possession limit of 10.
WA: No minimum size limit. Daily bag limit of 4 per person.
NSW: Daily bag limit of 20 per person (combined sea and silver sweep). No minimum size limit.
Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Sweep have exceptionally small mouths; using hooks that are too large will result in missed strikes. Always fish active wash zones, and keep throwing small amounts of bread or prawn-based berley to keep the school close.
- Eating Qualities Good eating quality. Sea sweep feature moist, sweet, white fillets with a fine texture and low oil content. Best prepared by filleting, skinning, and pan-frying fresh with butter and a squeeze of lemon. Do not freeze for long periods.
