Appearance & Identification

A highly streamlined, deep-bodied mackerel with a brilliant metallic-green back and bright silver flanks. They are easily identified by two lateral lines (one running along the back, the other dropping down to run near the belly) and a strong, scaly sheath covering the dorsal fin base. They commonly grow to 60cm-90cm, reaching up to 130cm and over 12kg.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed across northern Australia’s tropical reefs and inshore waters, from northern Western Australia, around the Top End, to southern Queensland. They prefer current-swept reef edges, deep drop-offs, and rocky headlands where they school to hunt baitfish.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Fast-action, heavy spinning rod of 2.1m to 2.4m, rated for 6kg to 12kg line classes, allowing for long, powerful casts with heavy lures.
  • Reels High-speed spinning reel (5000 to 8000 size) with a high-speed retrieve ratio (6.0:1 or greater) and a minimum of 8kg of carbon drag.
  • Line & Leader 10kg to 15kg braided main line with a 1.5m leader of 30lb to 50lb monofilament, joined to a short, 15cm wire trace of 30lb to 40lb single-strand wire to prevent bite-offs.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to metal casting slugs (30g to 60g), bibless minnows, and deep-diving bibbed minnows. Chrome, pink, and silver-blue patterns are deadly.
  • Live & Cut Baits Fresh whole pilchards, garfish, or strip baits of bonito, rigged on a three-hook gang hook rig (3/0 to 4/0) and cast or trolled.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling Troll at speeds of 5 to 7 knots using bibbed deep-diving minnows or rigged baitfish along the drop-offs of outer reefs and current lines.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drift with a whole pilchard on a gang hook rig suspended under a surface balloon or let it sink slowly through current seams near deep reefs.
  • Fly Fishing Utilize an 8 to 10-weight fly rod with a fast-sinking line, casting large, flash-heavy baitfish patterns on a short wire tippet.

State Legal Limits

QLD: Minimum size limit is 50cm. Daily bag limit of 10 per person.
WA: Minimum size limit of 50cm. Daily bag limit of 2 (part of the pelagic species limit).
NT: Daily bag limit of 5. Combined possession limit of 15.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Named 'shark' mackerel because of the strong, ammonia-like scent they can release from their skin when landed; this can be avoided by bleeding, filleting, and skinning the fish immediately after capture.
  • Eating Qualities Good table quality. They possess firm, oily white flesh with a rich, mackerel flavor. Fillets are best prepared fresh, pan-fried, grilled, or smoked. Bleed immediately upon capture and pack on ice.
