Appearance & Identification
Elongated, snake-like body covered in thick, slimy skin. They are a uniform dark olive-green to bronze-brown on the back, fading to a pale silver-white on the belly, and are distinguished from long-finned eels by the equal starting points of their dorsal and anal fins. Commonly grow to 45cm-80cm, with females reaching over 1m and 3kg.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed from southern Queensland, down through New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and southeastern South Australia. They inhabit freshwater streams, swamps, dams, lakes, and estuaries, migrating thousands of kilometers to the Coral Sea to spawn at maturity.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Medium-action spinning rod of 2.0m to 2.4m, rated for line classes between 4kg and 8kg to pull strong eels out of snags.
- Reels Reliable 3000 to 4000 size spinning reel with a robust drag system to handle their twisting, powerful fights.
- Line & Leader 6kg to 10kg braided main line or heavy monofilament. Combine with a 1m leader of 10kg to 15kg monofilament or fluorocarbon to resist abrasion against muddy bottoms and woody snags.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Eels are notorious for tangling lines into massive knots; always use strong swivels on your rig and bring a wet towel or glove to secure a firm grip on the slimy skin when unhooking.
- Eating Qualities Highly regarded as a delicacy when prepared correctly. They possess exceptionally rich, oily, firm white meat that is perfect for hot-smoking, grilling, or baking. Always skin the eel and remove the central backbone before cooking.
