Appearance & Identification

Deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish with a small, pointed head and a distinctively small mouth. They are a uniform silvery-grey to bronze-brown on the back, fading to white on the belly, with dark grey fins. Commonly grow to 30cm-40cm, reaching up to 55cm and 3kg in healthy dams.

Habitat & Movements

Native to the warm, slow-flowing rivers of the Murray-Darling Basin, though wild river populations are now highly protected. They are stocked extensively in closed freshwater impoundments and private dams across eastern Australia.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Light-action spinning rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for line classes between 2kg and 4kg, offering excellent sensitivity for subtle bites.
  • Reels Smooth 1500 to 2500 size spinning reel with a fluid, consistent drag to absorb their rapid, vibrating runs.
  • Line & Leader 3kg to 5kg braided main line with a 1.5m leader of 2kg to 4kg fluorocarbon to remain low-profile in clear impoundment waters.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Small soft plastic grubs, bibless micro-vibes, inline spinners, and small diving hardbodies. Work lures slowly around drowned timber or weed lines.
  • Live & Cut Baits Fresh freshwater shrimp, garden worms, or small yabbies. Present these baits on a running sinker or drop-shot rig using a small size 4 to 8 bait-holder hook.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling Slow-trolling small diving hardbodies or spinnerbaits along stocked dam margins, submerged tree lines, and rocky drop-offs at 1 to 2 knots.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drift with fresh freshwater shrimp or worms suspended under a sensitive float near submerged structure, letting the wind carry the bait naturally.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

QLD: Fully protected in all natural waters. In stocked dams (under SIPS), minimum size limit is 30cm, daily bag limit of 2 per person.
NSW: Fully protected in all rivers and streams. In stocked dams, minimum size limit is 30cm, daily bag limit of 5.
VIC: Fully protected in all wild rivers and streams. In stocked lakes/impoundments, daily bag limit of 5. No minimum size.
SA: Fully protected in all waters; no take permitted.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes In wild river systems within the Murray-Darling Basin, silver perch are fully protected and must be returned to the water immediately. Focus your targeting strictly on stocked, closed impoundments where taking them is legally permitted.
  • Eating Qualities Moderate eating. Stocked dam fish can sometimes have a muddy flavor if not purged or skinned. They feature white, firm, bony meat that is best prepared by filleting, skinning, and pan-frying fresh with herbs.
