Appearance & Identification

Robust, cigar-shaped body with a dark purplish-blue back and bright silver belly, marked by four to six distinct, dark longitudinal stripes running along the lower flanks. They possess small, sharp teeth and multiple dorsal and anal finlets behind their main fins. Commonly grow to 45cm-70cm, weighing up to 5kg, though specimens can reach over 80cm and 10kg.

Habitat & Movements

Pelagic species found in offshore temperate, subtropical, and tropical waters around Australia. Often school in deep, open waters along the continental shelf edge, current lines, and around offshore FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) where they actively hunt baitfish.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Fast-action spinning or overhead game rod of 2.1m to 2.4m, rated for 6kg to 10kg.
  • Reels High-speed spinning reel (4000 to 6000 size) with a fast gear ratio (6.0:1 or higher) or a light overhead game reel.
  • Line & Leader 6kg to 12kg braided main line with a 2m leader of 20lb to 30lb fluorocarbon or monofilament.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Small skirted trolling lures (3 to 5-inch), high-speed metal slugs, and surface stickbaits.
  • Live & Cut Baits Rarely targeted with bait, but live slimy mackerel, yellowtail scad, or fresh pilchards can occasionally work when drifted into schools.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling Troll at speeds of 6 to 8 knots using small skirted lures, feathers, or bibless minnows far behind the boat wash to target surface schools.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting live baits (such as pilchards or yellowtail) under a surface balloon near ocean current breaks or FADs.
  • Fly Fishing Heavy 8 to 10 weight fly rod with a fast-sinking or intermediate line, casting small flash baitfish or surf-candy flies into active surface feeds.

State Legal Limits

NSW: Daily bag limit of 5. No minimum size limit.
VIC: Daily bag limit of 5. No minimum size limit.
WA: Daily bag limit of 4 (as part of the nearshore/pelagic group). No minimum size limit.
QLD: General possession limit of 20 applies. No minimum size limit.
SA: Daily bag limit of 5. No minimum size limit.
TAS: Daily bag limit of 10. No minimum size limit.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Skipjack tuna are a great indication of larger pelagics in the area; look for diving birds or boiling water. Work your lures fast as they are easily spooked.
  • Eating Qualities Moderate table quality. Possesses dense, dry, very oily dark red meat with a strong flavor. Highly prized as a canning and smoking fish, and popular for fresh sashimi when bled immediately on capture, iced down, and have the dark lateral bloodline removed.
