Appearance & Identification

Deep-bodied, laterally compressed tropical snapper of a brilliant bright red-to-crimson coloration. They possess a noticeably smaller head profile, smaller mouth, and steeper forehead line than their cousin, the large-mouth nannygai (saddletail snapper), and show a dark dorsal band on the tail base as juveniles. They commonly grow to 40cm-60cm, reaching up to 80cm and 8kg.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed across tropical northern Australia, from northern Western Australia, around the Top End, to southern Queensland. They prefer deep-water gravel flats, coral reef slopes, wrecks, and isolated rubble beds in depths from 30m to over 100m.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Heavy overhead or spinning rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for PE 4 to PE 6 lines.
  • Reels High-capacity, robust overhead reel or a powerful 8000 to 10000 size heavy spinning reel with at least 12kg of smooth carbon drag.
  • Line & Leader 20kg to 30kg (40lb to 60lb) braided main line with a 2.5m leader of 60lb to 80lb hard-shell monofilament or fluorocarbon to resist reef friction.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Vertical metal jigs (100g to 200g), slow-pitch jigs, and large 6 to 8-inch soft plastic paddle tails rigged on heavy jig heads.
  • Live & Cut Baits Whole large squid, fresh pilchards, bonito slabs, or fish heads (such as fusiliers) on a double-hook paternoster rig.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting over isolated gravel beds, deep gutters, or small rises, keeping baits or jigs positioned just off the bottom.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

QLD: Minimum size limit is 40cm. Daily bag limit of 9 per person (combined small-mouth/crimson snapper and large-mouth/saddletail snapper).
WA: Combined demersal bag limit of 2 (in the West Coast/North Coast zones). Minimum size limit of 41cm.
NT: Daily bag limit of 5. Combined possession limit of 15.
NSW/VIC/TAS/SA: Not present / standard limits apply.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Small-mouth nannygai form massive, tight schools on deep-water structures. Use your sounder to locate schools, and keep your baits or jigs moving to maintain their feeding excitement. Always use a release weight for undersized fish caught in deep water.
  • Eating Qualities Outstanding eating quality. Features sweet, pristine white, flaky meat with a moist texture. Excellent prepared as fillets pan-fried in butter, baked whole, or steamed with ginger and shallots. Bleed immediately on capture.
