This majestic reef dweller features a robust, high-backed profile that ranges from a brilliant rosy-pink to a deep copper-bronze. Mature fish, particularly large males, develop a highly pronounced, bony hump on their forehead and a fleshy, prominent snout. Their flanks are scattered with brilliant, electric-blue spots that glow vividly when the fish is first pulled from the water. They possess incredibly powerful, crushing jaws lined with robust conical teeth designed specifically for destroying hard-shelled prey like crabs and sea urchins.
Habitat & Movements
Snapper occupy a massive variety of marine environments, from shallow inshore rubble patches to deep offshore coral reefs. In Moreton Bay, they are heavily targeted around the shallow artificial reefs of Scarborough, the historic coffee rock ledges of Mud Island, and the deep drop-offs at Peel Island. During the cooler winter months, large breeding aggregations push aggressively into the shallow bay waters to spawn and gorge on migrating bait schools. As the water warms in summer, mature adults tend to retreat back out to the deeper offshore reefs along the 35-fathom line.
