Appearance & Identification
This spectacular marine invertebrate features a robust, elongated, and highly translucent mantle bordered by broad, fleshy fins that run almost its entire length. Their skin is packed with thousands of highly active chromatophores, allowing them to rapidly flash complex patterns, turn completely transparent, or mimic their surroundings perfectly. They possess exceptionally large, highly developed eyes that provide superior vision for hunting in low-light conditions. Extending from their head are eight short arms and two long, rapid-firing feeding tentacles armed with sharp, tooth-ringed suckers.
Habitat & Movements
Southern calamari heavily populate shallow coastal bays, sheltered harbors, and expansive ribbon weed or seagrass meadows. In the Moreton Bay region, they are actively targeted around the shallow weed beds of Amity Point, the rock walls of the Manly Boat Harbour, and the fringes of Peel Island. They utilize the margins of these weed beds, rocky reef drop-offs, and sandy clearings to ambush passing baitfish and prawns. During the high tide, they will patrol very shallow water, often using the shadow lines of lighted public jetties to conceal their attacks.
