Appearance & Identification

Slender, streamlined silver body with a brilliant blue-grey back and silver-white sides marked by numerous small, faint grey-to-bronze spots scattered haphazardly along their flanks (not extending past the belly, unlike school mackerel). They have a uniformly dark blue-black dorsal fin and a deeply forked tail. Commonly caught between 50cm and 75cm, reaching up to 100cm and 5kg.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed across northern Australia’s tropical reefs and inshore waters, from northern Western Australia, around the Top End, to northern New South Wales, with major summer-autumn schools holding off southern Queensland (Moreton Bay). They prefer inshore coastal waters, shallow bays, sandy estuaries, and island reefs down to 30m depth.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Fast-action spinning or overhead game rod of 2.1m to 2.4m, rated for 4kg to 8kg line classes, allowing for long, powerful casts with metal lures.
  • Reels High-speed spinning reel (4000 to 5000 size) with a high-speed retrieve ratio (6.0:1 or greater) to keep pace with rapid surface strikes.
  • Line & Leader 6kg to 10kg braided main line with a 1.5m leader of 15kg to 20kg monofilament, joined to a short, 15cm wire trace of 30lb single-strand wire to prevent bite-offs.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to metal casting slugs (20g to 50g), high-speed bibless minnows, and surface poppers. Chrome, pink, and silver-blue patterns are deadly.
  • Live & Cut Baits Fresh whole pilchards, garfish, or strip baits of bonito, rigged on a three-hook gang hook rig (size 3/0 to 4/0) and slowly retrieved or drifted.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling Troll at speeds of 5 to 7 knots using bibbed deep-diving minnows or rigged baitfish along the drop-offs of inshore reefs, sandbanks, and shipping channels.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drift with a whole pilchard on a gang hook rig suspended under a surface balloon or let it sink slowly through the water column near structure.
  • Fly Fishing Utilize an 8 to 10-weight fly rod with a fast-sinking line, casting large, flash-heavy baitfish patterns on a short wire tippet.

State Legal Limits

QLD: Minimum size limit is 60cm. Daily bag limit of 5 per person.
NSW: Minimum size limit is 60cm. Daily bag limit of 5 per person.
WA: Minimum size limit of 50cm. Daily bag limit of 2 per person (part of the pelagic species limit).
NT: Daily bag limit of 5. Combined possession limit of 15.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Look for diving terns, splashing bait, or pressure waves along shallow sandbanks. Spotted mackerel are notorious for striking the swivels of your leader; keep your terminal connections low-profile to avoid bite-offs.
  • Eating Qualities Good table quality. They possess firm, oily white flesh with a rich, mackerel flavor. Fillets are best prepared fresh, pan-fried, grilled, or cut into cutlets. Always bleed immediately upon capture and pack on ice.
