Appearance & Identification
Features a streamlined, arrow-shaped mantle with short, triangular fins restricted to the rear tip of the mantle (unlike calamari which have fins along the entire body). They possess large, dark eyes, eight short arms, and two long feeding tentacles equipped with small suckers. They are pale pinkish-brown to translucent, with rapid chromatophore color changes. Commonly grow to mantle lengths of 15cm-30cm, reaching 40cm.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed widely across the cool temperate coastal waters of southern and eastern Australia, from southern Queensland down through New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, to Western Australia. They prefer deep sandy channels, seagrass flats, offshore bays, and open ocean waters in depths from 2m to over 80m.

Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Highly responsive to specialized squid jigs (size 1.8 to 3.0) with cloth-covered bodies in pink, orange, or natural baitfish patterns. Jigs with glow-in-the-dark (UV) properties are highly effective.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh whole baitfish (such as whitebait or yellowtail) skewered onto a wire squid spike and suspended under a float.
Field Tactics

- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over sand channels or gravel patches while trailing a squid jig or bait-spiked fish behind the boat, adjusting the depth to keep the jig floating just off the bottom.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Look for clean sand-weed interfaces. Arrow squid are highly attracted to artificial lights at night; target jetties, boat ramps, or structure with overhead lights to find active schools. Always have a bucket ready to let the squid discharge its ink.
- Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features clean, sweet white meat with a slightly firmer texture than calamari. Best prepared fresh by cleaning the mantle, cutting into rings or scoring, dusting in seasoned flour, and quick-frying in hot oil for 45 to 60 seconds.
