Appearance & Identification

Highly streamlined, slab-sided body with a dark blue-black back and silver-white flanks marked by 12 to 16 brilliant, vertical cobalt-blue bars that can rapidly change color to glowing lavender when the fish is excited. They are distinguished by a tall, pointed dorsal fin that is equal to or greater than the depth of their body, and a long, spear-like bill. Commonly caught between 1.8m and 2.5m in length, weighing between 50kg and 120kg, with the capacity to exceed 250kg.

Habitat & Movements

Pelagic species distributed across the cool temperate, subtropical, and tropical offshore waters of Australia, with a major recreational fishery centered along the continental shelf edge off New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia. They prefer deep oceanic waters, temperature breaks, and canyons where they chase schooling slimy mackerel and squid.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Heavy-duty overhead game trolling rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for 15kg to 37kg (30lb to 80lb) line classes.
  • Reels High-capacity overhead game reel (30W or 50W size) with a smooth, heavy-duty lever drag system capable of holding at least 600m of line.
  • Line & Leader 15kg to 37kg braided main line or heavy monofilament. Combine with a long wind-on leader of 100lb to 150lb monofilament to cushion violent head-shaking runs.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to skirted trolling lures (8 to 10-inch) in pink, purple, or skipjack patterns, and high-speed bibless lures.
  • Live & Cut Baits Whole live slimy mackerel, yellowtail scad, or rigged garfish. Present baits on a heavy 8/0 to 10/0 circle game hook, fished under a balloon or drifted through current lines.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling Troll at speeds of 6 to 8 knots using a spread of skirted lures and hookless teasers along continental shelf drop-offs and temperature breaks.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting over deep offshore canyons or reefs while slow-trolling a live bait, or chunk-drifted (cubing) with fresh pilchards.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

NSW: Daily bag limit of 1 per person (all billfish species combined). No minimum size limit applies.
VIC: Daily bag limit of 1 per person. No minimum size limit applies.
WA: Daily bag limit of 1 per person. No minimum size limit applies.
QLD: Personal daily bag limit of 2 billfish per person (combined spearfish, marlin, sailfish).

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Always keep the boat moving slowly forward during the release to ensure water passes through the fish's gills. Avoid lifting large marlin completely out of the water for photos, as this can cause fatal internal organ damage. Support the bill until the fish revives and swims away under its own power.
  • Eating Qualities Moderate table quality. Possesses dense, dry, very firm dark red meat with a strong flavor. While edible and suitable for grilling, smoking, or raw sashimi when bled immediately and iced, recreationally they are highly prized as catch-and-release sportfish.
