Striped Trumpeter

SCI: LATRIS LINEATA // SPECIES INTEL
A legendary deep-water reef prize of Australia's southern oceans, the striped trumpeter is universally regarded as one of our premier table species. Tricking these slow-growing, powerful reef dwellers requires heavy offshore tackle, large natural baits, and targeting steep continental shelf drops.

Appearance & Identification

Highly distinctive, deep-bodied shape with three prominent dark olive-to-brown longitudinal stripes running along their yellow-tinted silver flanks. They possess a long head, thick lips, and a strong, deeply forked tail fin. Commonly caught between 45cm and 70cm, with mature deep-water specimens reaching up to 1.2m and weighing over 20kg.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed across the cool temperate offshore waters of southern Australia, from southern New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, to southern Western Australia. Juveniles gather in shallow bays and kelp forests, while mature adults migrate to offshore rocky reef ledges and steep continental shelf slopes in depths from 50m to over 300m.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Utilize a heavy-duty, fast-action overhead or spinning rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for PE 3 to PE 5 lines. The rod requires a stiff, powerful lower section to cope with heavy sinkers in deep water and to steer fish away from jagged reef ledges.
  • Reels Pair your rod with a high-capacity, robust overhead reel or a powerful 8000 to 10000 size spinning reel. Ensure the reel features a powerful, consistent drag system capable of delivering at least 12kg of drag.
  • Line & Leader Spool with 15kg to 24kg (30lb to 50lb) braided main line to guarantee zero stretch and maximum bottom sensitivity in extreme depths. Combine this braid with a long, 3m leader of 60lb to 80lb hard-shell monofilament or fluorocarbon.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to vertical metal jigs (100g to 250g) and heavy slow-pitch jigs. Work these lures with a slow, mechanical hopping motion directly off the sandy margins of deep-water reef drops.
  • Live & Cut Baits Whole large squid, fresh octopus, or fillet slabs of oily fish (such as barracouta or blue mackerel). Present baits on a heavy-gauge two-hook paternoster rig with a circle hook size 6/0 to 8/0 and a heavy sinker to maintain bottom contact.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting over isolated deep-water pinnacles, outer reef drops, or deep offshore gravel flats is highly productive. Position your boat up-drift of the target structure, keeping your line as vertical as possible to prevent snagging.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

TAS: Minimum size limit is 55cm. Daily bag limit of 4 per person, possession limit of 8. Fished strictly during open seasons (closed spawning season runs 1 Sept to 31 Oct).
VIC: No minimum size limit. Daily bag limit of 5 per person.
SA: No minimum size limit. Daily bag limit of 5 per person.
WA/NSW: Standard limits apply (general bag limits or unlisted finfish limits).

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Striped trumpeter are slow-growing and late-maturing (taking up to 10 years to breed), making them highly vulnerable to overfishing. Use your sounder to locate steep, deep-water reef drops and current breaks, and fish during low-wind days.
  • Eating Qualities Outstanding, legendary table quality. Features firm, sweet, white, and moist fillets with a rich oil content. Highly prized for baking whole, pan-searing, or hot-smoking. Bleed immediately upon capture and keep on ice.
