Appearance & Identification
Classic snapper profile with a yellowish-silver body marked by eight to nine prominent, horizontal golden-brown to orange stripes along their sides. They have bright yellow pelvic, anal, and pectoral fins, and a moderately forked tail. Commonly caught between 20cm and 30cm, reaching up to 40cm and 1.5kg.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed across tropical northern Australia, from Western Australia’s Gascoyne coast, around the Top End, to southern Queensland. They prefer shallow coastal reefs, coral gardens, rocky ledges, and mangrove-lined estuaries in depths from 2m to 80m.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Light spinning or baitcasting rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for line classes between 3kg and 6kg, offering excellent sensitivity.
- Reels Smooth 2000 to 2500 size spinning reel or low-profile baitcasting reel with a consistent drag system.
- Line & Leader 4kg to 6kg braided main line with a 1.5m leader of 6kg to 10kg fluorocarbon to remain low-profile in clear reef waters.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Small soft plastic grubs, paddle tails, or small diving hardbodies (4cm to 7cm). Natural green/gold, pink, or white patterns are highly effective.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh peeled prawns, pilchard chunks, or small strips of fresh squid on a size 1 to 1/0 circle or bait-holder hook.

- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over shallow coral gardens, allowing your light bait or lure to search the reef edges.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Stripey snapper school in large numbers around structures. If you find one, there are likely dozens nearby. Fish during low-light dawn or dusk periods when they are actively hunting on shallow flats.
- Eating Qualities Good eating quality. Features sweet, delicate, fine-textured white meat. Fillets are best prepared fresh, pan-fried with butter, baked whole, or steamed with light ginger. Bleed immediately on capture.
