Appearance & Identification
Rounder, more cylindrical body shape than other heavily flattened flatheads. They are sand-brown to light pinkish-grey on the back with numerous bright orange-brown spots, and a white belly. They are immediately distinguished by their large, prominent canine-like teeth and two spines in front of their gill covers (with the lower spine being longer). Commonly grow to 35cm-55cm, reaching up to 70cm and 3kg.
Habitat & Movements
Endemic to Australia, distributed from northern New South Wales, around Victoria and Tasmania, to eastern South Australia. They are a demersal species found over sandy and muddy seafloors on the continental shelf in depths from 10m to 400m, moving into shallower waters prior to spawning.

Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Highly responsive to heavy soft plastics (4 to 5-inch curl tails or paddle tails) on 1/4oz to 1/2oz jig heads, and heavy metal jigs worked slowly off the bottom.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh pilchard tails, whole baitfish, or strips of squid or octopus on a two-hook paternoster rig with a heavy sinker to maintain vertical bottom contact.
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over extensive deep-water sand and mud flats is the primary method. Keep your rig or heavy soft plastic bouncing along the bottom, creating a sand cloud to trigger strikes.

- Field Notes Unlike shallow-water flathead, tiger flathead are equipped with serious, sharp canine teeth that can easily bite through light leaders. Always run a slightly heavier leader and handle with thick gloves.
