Appearance & Identification
Large, robust, pale grey-to-brown body marked by striking, dark brown-to-black vertical bands (stripes) across their shell and legs. They possess a long, strong rostrum and a blue-to-yellow tipped tail. Adult specimens are massive, growing up to 25cm in length.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed across tropical and subtropical northern Australia, from Western Australia’s Gascoyne coast, around the Top End, to northern New South Wales. They prefer sandy-mud seafloors, shallow coastal bays, and sandy estuary channels in depths from 1m to 40m.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Nets & Traps: Hand-held dip nets, pocket nets, or cast nets (up to 3.7m radius in QLD). In New South Wales, hand-hauled prawn nets or push nets are also popular in designated waters.
- Reels Accessory Gear: High-intensity underwater LED lights, headlamps, floating catch buckets, and fine sorting trays to separate prawns from by-catch.
- Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Hand-held net frames, float cords, and net drawstrings. No standard fishing lines apply.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Attractants & Scents: Light & Luminescence. Strong underwater lights are the primary attractant used to spot their bright orange eyes reflecting in the dark.
- Live & Cut Baits NOT APPLICABLE
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Soak Times & Tides: Target the dark of the moon (new moon phase) during the run-out tide on warm summer nights when prawns emerge from the sand to migrate.
- Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Tiger prawns are highly active and will jump backward with immense speed when startled by light. Always position your dip net behind the prawn's tail, then gently touch its nose to make it jump directly into the net.
- Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features firm, sweet, rich meat with a distinct lobster-like texture. Best prepared whole by boiling in clean seawater for 2 to 3 minutes, or split-grilling the tail with garlic butter.
