Appearance & Identification
Features a spectacular, brightly colored carapace with intricate patterns of blue, green, gold, and black, and distinctively striped legs. They have thick, long, colorful antennae and lack large claws. Adult specimens are massive, frequently exceeding 20cm in carapace length and weighing over 5kg.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed across tropical and subtropical northern Australia, ranging from the Gascoyne in Western Australia, around the Top End, to southern Queensland. They prefer shallow coral reef crevices, bomboras, and outer reef drop-offs in depths from 1m to 25m.

- Rods Nets & Traps: Hand-collection or hand-held lobster loops while snorkeling or breath-hold diving. In Queensland, the use of pots, traps, or spears to take tropical rock lobsters is strictly illegal; they must be collected solely by hand.
- Reels Accessory Gear: A precise measuring gauge to verify carapace or tail length before surfacing, thick protective diving gloves, and heavy-duty mesh catch bags.
- Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Dive safety lines, float ropes, and catch bag clips. Standard fishing lines and rigging do not apply.

State Legal Limits
QLD: Minimum carapace length is 90mm, or tail length of 115mm. Daily bag limit of 3 per person (maximum of 6 per boat) in some zones, and 5 per person (10 per boat) in others. Strict seasonal closures apply.
NT: Daily bag limit of 5. Combined possession limit of 10. No minimum size limit applies.
WA: Minimum size limit is 76mm (carapace length). Daily bag limit of 8 per person.
Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Queensland has a strict seasonal closure (typically 1 October to 31 January in specified northern waters). Never collect egg-bearing (berried) females; they must be returned immediately.
- Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features exceptionally sweet, firm, and white meat. Best prepared by split-grilling the tail over hot coals with garlic butter, or steaming whole. Do not overcook.
