Appearance & Identification

Distinctly elongated head with a protruding upper jaw (unlike Murray cod which has a protruding or equal lower jaw) and a straight-to-slightly concave forehead profile. They are a blue-grey to dark grey-green on the back, covered in numerous small, distinct dark spots, and feature a dark stripe running through the eye. Commonly grow to 40cm-60cm, reaching up to 85cm and 16kg.

Habitat & Movements

Native to the cool, fast-flowing gravel-bedded rivers of the southern Murray-Darling Basin (such as the Murray, Murrumbidgee, and Goulburn systems). They prefer deep pools with rapid current, holding close to heavy timber snags and rocky structures.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Medium-heavy spinning or baitcasting rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for 6kg to 12kg classes (only legally targeted in the few specified put-and-take Victorian lakes).
  • Reels Robust 3000 to 4000 size spinning reel or low-profile baitcasting reel with a smooth, powerful carbon drag.
  • Line & Leader 10kg to 15kg braided main line with a 1.5m leader of 15kg to 20kg fluorocarbon to resist wood friction.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to large spinnerbaits, diving hardbodies, and soft plastic swimbaits. Natural purple, cod-green, or black patterns are highly effective.
  • Live & Cut Baits Large scrubworms, freshwater shrimp, or bardi grubs on a size 3/0 to 5/0 bait-holder hook.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling Slow-trolling large diving hardbodies or spinnerbaits along stocked lake margins and rocky drop-offs in specified Victorian waters at 1 to 2 knots.
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting with large baits or soft plastics alongside deep woody snags, letting the current wash the bait naturally through the pool.
  • Fly Fishing Heavy 8 to 9-weight fly rod with a sinking line, casting large, weedless baitfish or frog patterns near structure.

State Legal Limits

NSW: Fully protected in all waters. Strictly zero take.
VIC: Fully protected in all wild rivers and streams. Fished strictly as catch and release except in Lake Sambell and Lake Kerferd where a daily bag limit of 1, minimum size 40cm to 50cm slot applies.
SA/ACT: Fully protected. Strictly zero take.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Easily confused with Murray cod. Trout cod have a protruding upper jaw, straight snout, and a distinct eye stripe. If caught, keep the fish in the water at all times, remove the hook carefully, and release it immediately with minimal handling.
  • Eating Qualities STRICTLY NO TAKE in all wild waters. It is an offense to harvest or possess trout cod from wild systems. In Victoria, take is permitted only in specified stocked lakes (Lake Sambell and Lake Kerferd), but wild catch-and-release is standard.
