Appearance & Identification
Streamlined body with a pale silvery-bronze back and silver sides, immediately identified by distinctive, irregular dark grey-to-brown blotches and markings along their flanks, and a bright yellow-to-grey anal fin. Commonly caught between 18cm and 25cm, reaching up to 30cm.
Habitat & Movements
Coastal waters, shallow sandy bays, muddy estuary channels, and tidal flats from southern Queensland, down through New South Wales, around Victoria, to South Australia. They prefer deep sand and silt channels in depths from 2m to 30m.

- Rods Light-action, highly sensitive spinning rod of 2.1m to 2.4m, rated for line classes between 1kg and 3kg to detect subtle bottom taps.
- Reels Smooth, light 1000 to 2000 size spinning reel with a responsive, light-starting drag system.
- Line & Leader 1.5kg to 3kg braided main line with a long, 2m leader of 4lb to 6lb fluorocarbon to remain low-profile in clear waters.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Rarely targeted on artificials. However, they can occasionally be caught on small soft plastic grubs (1.5 to 2-inch) or micro-vibes worked slowly along the bottom.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh bloodworms, beach worms, or small peeled prawn pieces. Present these baits on a two-hook paternoster rig with long-shank size 6 to 8 hooks and a red bead on each hook to attract attention.
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over open sandy flats or mud channels in a boat is the primary method. Allow your baited rigs to drag along the bottom behind the boat, keeping the line tight to feel their rapid, tapping bites.

NSW: Minimum size limit is 27cm (fished under the general whiting limit). Daily bag limit of 20 per person.

SA: Daily bag limit of 20 per person. No minimum size limit applies.
Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes In Queensland, winter whiting have no minimum size limit, unlike summer (sand) whiting, making them highly accessible. However, they are easily confused with summer whiting; always check for the dark blotches on the flanks of the winter whiting.
- Eating Qualities Excellent table quality. Features sweet, delicate, fine-textured white meat. Fillets are best prepared skinless, dusted in seasoned flour or light panko crumbs, and quick-fried in hot butter.
