Appearance & Identification
Stout, deep-bodied reef fish with a steep head profile and strong jaws armed with prominent, protruding bright blue canine teeth. They have a striking pinkish-red to orange-brown body covered in small blue spots on each scale, with bright blue lines radiating from their eyes and a yellow tail. Commonly caught between 30cm and 50cm, reaching up to 65cm and 4kg.
Habitat & Movements
Endemic to the eastern coast of Australia, ranging from Cape York in Queensland south to northern New South Wales. They prefer deep rocky offshore reefs, coral ledges, and gravel gutters in depths from 10m to 100m.
Tackle Loadout
- Rods Medium-heavy spinning or overhead rod of 1.8m to 2.1m, rated for PE 3 to PE 5 lines to handle powerful demersal runs.
- Reels Robust 5000 to 8000 size spinning reel or a strong overhead reel with at least 10kg of carbon fiber drag.
- Line & Leader 15kg to 24kg (30lb to 50lb) braided main line with a 2m leader of 40lb to 60lb hard-shell fluorocarbon to resist reef friction.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Rarely targeted with artificials, but can occasionally be caught on micro-jigs, slow-pitch jigs, or heavy soft plastics worked near deep reef bases.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh whole crabs (such as soldier crabs), peeled prawns, or fresh squid. Present these baits on a heavy-gauge 4/0 to 6/0 circle hook fished on a running sinker or paternoster rig.
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Drifting over deep-water rocky reef ledges or gravel channels is highly productive. Let your bait drift slowly along the bottom, keeping your line tight.

QLD: Minimum size limit is 30cm. Daily bag limit of 6 per person (combined Venus tuskfish and other tuskfish species). Combined reef fin fish possession limit of 20 applies.
NSW: Daily bag limit of 5. No minimum size limit applies.

- Field Notes Like all tuskfish, the Venus tuskfish has incredibly strong jaws designed for crushing crabs and shells. Always use heavy-gauge, high-quality hooks that will not bend under the immense pressure of their bite.
- Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features sweet, pristine white, flaky meat with a moist texture and clean flavor. Fillets are best prepared fresh, pan-fried in butter, baked whole, or steamed with ginger and shallots. Bleed immediately on capture.
