Appearance & Identification

Features an oval-shaped, exceptionally robust double shell (bivalve) covered in fine, concentric ridges. Body coloration ranges from pale sandy-cream to grey-brown, with a smooth, polished porcelain-white interior. Commonly grow to shell lengths of 3cm to 5cm across the widest part of the shell.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed across the cool temperate shallow bays, sandy estuaries, and intertidal mudflats of southern Australia, with major populations centered in South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. They live buried just beneath the sand surface from the intertidal zone down to depths of 5m.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Nets & Traps: Hand-collection or the use of hand-held rakes. In Victoria and South Australia, using digging implements or hand rakes in the intertidal zone is highly restricted or illegal; hand-collection using fingers and feet is the primary legal recreational method.
  • Reels Accessory Gear: A precise vernier caliper or flat measuring gauge to verify shell width, a hand sieve to rinse away mud and sand, and a heavy-duty mesh collection bag.
  • Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Dive safety lines, float ropes, and quick-release catch bag clips. Standard fishing lines and rigging do not apply.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials NOT APPLICABLE
  • Live & Cut Baits NOT APPLICABLE

Field Tactics

  • Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
  • Drifting & Jigging Soak Times & Tides: Forage during low-water spring tides when mudflats are exposed, especially during low-light dawn or dusk hours when vongole are active near the sand surface.
  • Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE

State Legal Limits

SA: Coffin Bay minimum size is 3.8cm; all other waters: 3.0cm. Daily bag limit of 300 per person in Spencer Gulf and other waters, reduced to 150 in Gulf St Vincent and Kangaroo Island.
VIC: Outside Corner Inlet: Daily combined limit of 5 litres (or 1 litre shucked). In Corner Inlet: 2 litres (or 0.5 litres shucked). No minimum size limit applies. Digging implements strictly prohibited in the intertidal zone.
TAS: Minimum size limit is 3.2cm shell length. Daily bag limit of 100 per person.
WA: Combined daily bag limit of 2 litres per person. No minimum size limit applies.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Always check regional health warnings before harvesting, as bivalve mollusks can accumulate toxins during harmful algal blooms. Purging vongole in clean seawater is the absolute secret to ensuring a grit-free meal.
  • Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features a highly delicate, sweet, and oceanic flavor. Best prepared fresh by purging in clean seawater overnight to remove sand, then steaming in white wine, garlic, and parsley for 2 to 3 minutes until the shells pop open.
