Appearance & Identification
Exceptionally long, slender, torpedo-shaped body covered in tiny, fine scales. They are brilliant metallic cobalt-blue on the back with silver flanks marked by 25 to 30 vertical, dark wavy bands that drop down to the belly, and possess a long, pointed snout with a massive mouth lined with razor-sharp, closely packed teeth. Commonly caught between 90cm and 140cm, weighing up to 25kg, with the capacity to exceed 2m and 50kg.
Habitat & Movements
Pelagic species distributed across the tropical and subtropical oceanic waters of northern Australia, migrating south during summer and autumn with warm currents down through Western Australia and New South Wales. They prefer warm, deep-blue water along continental shelf edges, current lines, and offshore FADs in depths from 20m to over 500m.

- Rods Fast-action, heavy overhead or spinning rod of 2.1m to 2.4m, rated for PE 4 to PE 8 line classes to withstand high-speed trolling tension.
- Reels High-speed spinning reel (10000 to 18000 size) or overhead game reel with an ultra-smooth, heavy drag capable of delivering at least 12kg of drag.
- Line & Leader 15kg to 37kg (30lb to 80lb) braided main line with a 2m leader of 60lb to 100lb monofilament, joined to a short, 30cm single-strand wire trace of 40lb to 60lb to prevent bite-offs.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Highly responsive to high-speed skirted lures (6 to 9-inch), high-speed bibless minnows, and deep-diving bibbed minnows. Purple, black/purple, and pink/silver patterns are deadly.
- Live & Cut Baits Whole rigged garfish, slimy mackerel, or whole squid on a heavy two-hook gang rig (size 6/0 to 8/0) or a single-circle hook rig on a wire leader.
Field Tactics
- Trolling Troll at high speeds of 8 to 15 knots using heavy bibless lures or skirted lures along the continental shelf edge, temperature breaks, or deep current lines.
- Drifting & Jigging Drift with a live slimy mackerel or scad suspended 15m to 20m below a surface balloon near blue-water current margins, keeping a light drag setting.
- Fly Fishing Heavy 12-weight fly rod with a fast-sinking intermediate line, casting large, flash-heavy baitfish patterns on a short wire tippet into prop wash teasers.
