Appearance & Identification
Robust, heavily armored body covered in sharp spines, with a uniform reddish-purple to deep pink-red coloration and a single white dot on the outside edge of each tail segment. They possess long, thick sensory antennae and lack large claws. Adult specimens commonly measure 7.6cm to 12cm in carapace length, and can grow to weigh over 5kg.
Habitat & Movements
Endemic to Western Australia, distributed along the continental shelf from Cape Leeuwin north to Shark Bay, with major populations centered around the Abrolhos Islands and Rottnest Island. Juveniles inhabit shallow inshore reefs in depths up to 40m, while adults migrate to deep water reefs up to 80m.
Tactical Loadout
- Rods Nets & Traps: Collapsible or rigid rock lobster pots (maximum of 2 per licensed fisher) equipped with legally compliant escape gaps (minimum 54mm) and sea lion exclusion devices (SLEDs) in designated zones. Hand-take while diving is permitted.
- Reels Accessory Gear: Legally marked surface floats (minimum 15cm diameter), pre-set lobster measuring gauges to verify carapace length, and heavy wet towels or protective gloves.
- Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Use 8mm to 10mm weighted, rot-resistant ropes to connect pots to floats, keeping the line vertical and away from boat propellers. No rods or lines apply.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Attractants & Scents: Highly concentrated salmon oil, fish frame holders, or commercial scent gels placed in a secure bait basket inside the pot.
- Live & Cut Baits Fresh oily fish frames, blue mackerel, salmon heads, or barracouta slabs. Highly durable, oily fish species are essential to withstand the picking of smaller reef fish.
Field Tactics
- Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
- Drifting & Jigging Soak Times & Tides: Run a 12 to 24-hour soak, pulling pots at first light. Rock lobsters are strictly nocturnal foragers, emerging from their caves under the cover of darkness to feed.
- Fly Fishing NOT APPLICABLE
State Legal Limits
WA: Minimum size limit is 76mm (carapace length). Daily bag limit of 8 per person. Boat limit is 24 with three licensed fishers on board.
Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Strict compliance is mandatory. It is legally required to immediately return all 'berried' (egg-bearing) or 'tarspot' (mated) females to the water, and recreational fishers must clip the tail fin or punch a hole in the tail of legal catches to prevent illegal sale.
- Eating Qualities World-class seafood. Features exceptionally sweet, firm, and dense white meat. Boil whole in clean seawater for 8 to 10 minutes, immediately plunge into an ice bath, and split down the center to serve with warm garlic butter.
