Appearance & Identification

Extremely small, slender, and almost completely translucent-to-white body with large, silvery eyes. They lack scales and show a fine, dark stripe along the midline of the body. Adults commonly grow to between 4cm and 6cm in length.

Habitat & Movements

Cool temperate rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters of southeastern Australia, with major populations centered in Tasmania, Victoria, and southern New South Wales. They school heavily to migrate upstream into freshwater rivers to spawn during spring.
