Appearance & Identification
Highly robust body with a smooth carapace, broad swimming tail, and two large, powerful pinching claws. Body coloration varies from light olive-green, brown, to striking bright blue depending on water clarity and shedding cycles. Commonly measure 7cm to 12cm in length.
Habitat & Movements
Distributed widely across the freshwater systems of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, and introduced to Western Australia. They prefer sluggish slow-moving rivers, swamps, billabongs, and farm dams, burrowing deep into muddy banks to survive dry periods.

- Line & Leader Rigging & Cordage: Use 3mm to 5mm polyester rope to connect traps to floats or bank anchors, keeping the line vertical to avoid tangling bankside vegetation.
Best Lures & Baits
- Artificials Attractants & Scents: Highly concentrated aniseed oil, fish oil, or commercial crustacean attractants secured inside a bait mesh pocket inside the trap.
- Live & Cut Baits Scented dry dog food kibble, raw meat slices (such as beef liver), or fresh fish frames. Highly durable baits are essential to resist the picking of smaller freshwater fish.

Final Logistics & Table Quality
- Field Notes Always check state-specific rules regarding the use of opera house nets; they are strictly banned in all public waters in Victoria and New South Wales due to the risk of drowning platypuses and water rats (Rakali).
- Eating Qualities Good eating quality. Features exceptionally sweet, delicate white tail and claw meat. Boil whole in salted water for 4 to 6 minutes, immediately plunge into an ice bath, and clean by removing the carapace before eating.
