Appearance & Identification
This highly adaptable, deep-bodied fish features a robust, laterally compressed profile perfectly suited for navigating heavy timber and rocky snags. Their coloration ranges from a brilliant, highly reflective silver-bronze in clean oceanic waters to a dark, tarnished gold when residing deep in muddy estuaries. They are easily identified by the bright, vibrant yellow tint adorning their pelvic and anal fins. Their mouths are relatively small but incredibly powerful, lined with rows of molar-like teeth designed explicitly to crush oysters, barnacles, and small crabs.
Habitat & Movements
Yellowfin bream are incredibly resilient and inhabit a massive variety of coastal structures, from turbulent surf gutters to the upper brackish reaches of tidal rivers. In the Moreton Bay region, they swarm the rock walls of the Brisbane River, the dense mangrove roots of the Pumicestone Passage, and the oyster-encrusted pylons of the Redcliffe Jetty. They are heavily structure-oriented, relying entirely on submerged timber, rocky break walls, and residential pontoons to hide from predators while ambushing bait. During the winter months, massive schools aggregate near the deep ocean bars to spawn before returning to the estuaries.

Rig these delicate baits on a sharp, fine-gauge size 2 to 4 long-shank hook with the absolute minimum amount of lead required to slowly sink the bait. Freshly peeled prawn chunks, strips of mullet gut, and local pipis are also incredibly reliable options when fished completely unweighted down a berley trail.
Field Tactics
- Trolling Trolling tiny, 35mm to 40mm deep-diving crankbaits is a highly productive and underrated search tactic across the expansive shallow sand flats of the bay.
