Yellowfin Whiting

SCI: SILLAGO SCHOMBURGKII // SPECIES INTEL
A highly active, visual predator of southern sand flats, the yellowfin whiting is a premier light-tackle target. Tricking these fast, easily spooked schoolers requires light line configurations, fresh live worms, or precise surface-lure presentations.

Appearance & Identification

Streamlined body of a uniform silver-to-peachy-bronze coloration with a pale belly, immediately identified by their bright yellow-to-golden pelvic and anal fins. They have a small, downward-pointing mouth designed for sucking prey out of the sand, and lack any dark spots or blotches on the body. Commonly grow to 22cm-32cm, reaching up to 42cm.

Habitat & Movements

Distributed across the southern waters of Western Australia and South Australia, with major populations centered in Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf. They prefer shallow inshore sand flats, tidal estuaries, muddy bays, and tidal channels in depths from 0.5m to 10m.

Tactical Loadout

  • Rods Long, light-action spinning rod of 2.1m to 2.7m, rated for line classes between 1kg and 3kg, offering excellent sensitivity.
  • Reels Smooth, high-performance 2000 to 2500 size spinning reel with a responsive, light-starting drag system.
  • Line & Leader 1.5kg to 3kg braided main line with a long, 2m leader of 4lb to 6lb monofilament or fluorocarbon to remain completely invisible in clear, shallow waters.

Best Lures & Baits

  • Artificials Highly responsive to small surface poppers (40mm to 50mm) and walk-the-dog hardbodies. Retrieve surface lures with a fast, continuous 'walk-the-dog' retrieve with no pauses, which triggers a highly aggressive reaction strike.
  • Live & Cut Baits Live beach worms, bloodworms, or freshly pumped yabbies. Present these baits on a running sinker rig using a long-shank size 4 to 6 hook with red tubing or beads on the line to attract attention.

Field Tactics

  • Trolling NOT APPLICABLE
  • Drifting & Jigging Drifting over shallow sand bays is highly productive. Allow your baits to trail slowly behind the boat on a light running sinker rig, keeping your line long to avoid engine noise.
  • Fly Fishing Utilize a light 4 to 5-weight fly rod with a floating line to cast small, pink or olive-colored shrimp patterns over shallow sand flats. Strip the fly with slow, rhythmic movements, letting it sink to the sand.

State Legal Limits

SA: Minimum size limit is 24cm. Daily bag limit of 20 per person (Spencer Gulf/other waters), 10 (Gulf St Vincent/Kangaroo Island).
WA: Minimum size limit is 25cm. Daily bag limit of 8 per person.

Final Logistics & Table Quality

  • Field Notes Yellowfin whiting are highly sensitive to sudden movements and shadows in shallow water. Avoid wearing bright clothing, and cast far ahead of your position on the flats to avoid spooking active schools.
  • Eating Qualities Outstanding table quality. Features sweet, delicate, fine-textured white meat. Fillets are best prepared skinless, dusted in seasoned flour or light panko crumbs, and quick-fried in hot butter.
