The morning air is crisp with four knots of wind out of the southwest. Dave steps off the dry shell bank into knee-deep water. Across from him, another fisho is working a standard 1/4oz lead jighead with a motor-oil paddle-tail. Every third retrieve, the lead head drags into slimy ribbon weed, fouling the hook. Forty minutes of casting produces zero hits. The bottom water is cold, and the flathead are sitting glued to the sand, refusing to run down fast-moving plastics.

Dave unclips the lead jig. He ties on a 75mm suspending jerkbait using a loose loop knot. He casts across the slow current and turns the reel handle three quick times to pull the plastic bib down to 0.8 meters.

Then, he stops his hands entirely. One second. Two seconds. Three seconds. The lure hangs dead flat in mid-water, perfectly suspended 20 centimeters above the sand without sinking into the weed or floating up. At the four-second mark, Dave gives the rod tip one soft twitch. The water explodes. A 64cm dusky flathead lifts off the sand and engulfs the lure while it sits completely stationary.

The tide has been dropping for three hours. The main sandbank is dry, forcing all the baitfish off the shallow flats into a narrow knee-deep drainage channel. An eager fisho wades directly into the mouth of the drain, splashing through the shallows and casting straight down the middle of the channel. He works the run for twenty minutes without a single touch. His heavy footsteps sent pressure waves through the shallow water, pushing every fish off the bank.

Dave approaches from thirty meters back. He stops before entering the water and reads the sand. Low-tide depressions show three distinct triangular lies where large flathead had been resting before the tide dropped. The fish have not left the area; they have simply slid two meters sideways into the deeper water of the channel edge.

Dave stays five meters back from the drop-off. He ties on a deep-diving 80mm minnow. Instead of casting into the middle of the gutter, he casts diagonally across the channel onto the shallow sand shoulder. He winds steadily until the long plastic bib digs hard into the sand, kicking up a grey cloud of silt. The moment the lure knocks the sand, he stops winding. As the suspending minnow hovers inside the dust cloud, the rod folds under heavy weight. A solid 70cm flathead had been sitting directly under the lip of the drop-off, waiting for prey to wash out of the silt.

The tide has turned to dead low slack. Dave is wading 300 meters out from the shore along a clean sand flat bordered by dark patches of strap weed. Instead of picking his feet up out of the water, Dave slides his boots forward along the sand in a continuous shuffle. His boots bump a buried stingray, which glides away into the channel without incident. The smooth movement keeps the surface glassed out and quiet.

Ten meters ahead, the flat gives way to a rocky point where the currents meet. A school of poddy mullet scatters across the surface. A flash of silver cuts through the school: chopper tailor and big yellowfin bream are hunting the drop-off alongside the flathead. Dave does not carry three rods onto the flats. He carries one 2 to 4 kilogram graphite spin rod spooled with 8-pound braid. His leader is 12-pound high-abrasion fluorocarbon.

He unhooks his 66mm minnow and fires a cast straight past the rock point. Instead of the long, dead pauses used for flathead, he speeds up his reel handle and delivers rapid, continuous rod twitches. A 40cm yellowfin bream smashes the lure on the rip, followed two casts later by a green-backed tailor that leaps into the air. The 12-pound fluorocarbon resists the tailor's sharp teeth without requiring a wire trace that would spook the bream. When the surface action slows, Dave returns to a slow twitch-and-pause cadence over the deep drop-offs and hooks his target flathead on the identical outfit.
