[ NEXT-GEN ARTIFICIAL LURES & SWIMBAIT TACTICS ]

STATUS: ACTIVE
TECH CLASS: Artificial Terminal Tackle / Swimbaits & Soft Plastics
TARGET SPECIES: Murray Cod, Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Australian Bass.

[ 01. THE LURE-ONLY MANDATE ]

Live bait catches passive fish, but artificial lures trigger aggressive reaction strikes from apex native predators. Artificial lures also prevent gut-hooking, ensuring a 99% survival rate for released fish.

To consistently trigger strikes from large natives, fishos must match lure action to water temperature and barometric pressure.

[ 02. CATEGORY BREAKDOWN & SELECTION ]

Do not carry hundreds of random lures. Master these three core artificial lure categories:

  • Hard Swimbaits (150mm to 250mm): Jointed glide baits and multi-jointed swimbaits for big Murray Cod and Barramundi. They displace massive amounts of water and mimic injured baitfish.
  • Weedless Soft Plastics (100mm to 150mm): Paddle tails rigged on belly-weighted weedless hooks. Essential for skipping deep into mangrove snags for Jack or rolling over drowned timber for Barra.
  • Micro Topwater (40mm to 70mm): Soft-winged cicadas and surface walkers. Designed for night fishing or low-light surface strikes from Australian Bass and Estuary Perch.

[ 03. RETRIEVE SPEEDS & SINK RATES ]

Lure presentation dictates strike rate. Adjust your retrieve based on these tactical parameters:

  1. The “Dead-Stick” Pause: When fishing hard swimbaits for Murray Cod, pause the lure for 3 to 5 seconds near timber structure. 70% of strikes occur when the lure is sitting completely still.
  2. The Slow-Roll: Retrieve paddle tail soft plastics just fast enough to make the tail vibrate. If your lure isn’t bumping timber or rocks occasionally, you are fishing too high in the water column.
  3. Burn-and-Burn: In warm water (24°C+), retrieve surface lures rapidly across shallow points to trigger impulse strikes from aggressive Barramundi and Jack.

[ 04. HARDWARE & HOOK UPGRADES ]

Factory lure hooks will straighten under the jaw pressure of a 1-meter native fish.

HOOKS: Upgrade factory trebles to 4X-strong heavy wire hooks or inline single hooks. Inline singles reduce snags in timber and allow for faster, safer unhooking in the net.

SPLIT RINGS: Replace soft factory split rings with heavy-duty forged steel split rings rated to a minimum of 50lb.

BARBS: Always crush hook barbs flat using pliers before casting.
