[ 01. THE LIVE SONAR ADVANTAGE ]
Traditional 2D sonar shows you where the fish were. Forward-facing sonar (like Garmin LiveScope or Lowrance ActiveTarget) shows you where the fish are right now. A transducer mounted to your electric motor or an independent pole shoots a live, video-like feed up to 30 meters ahead of your boat.
This tech eliminates dead water. If there are no fish on the screen, you do not cast. You keep moving.
[ 02. BASELINE SETUP PARAMETERS ]
Do not install this tech on a standard lead-acid battery setup. It will fail. You must meet the following hardware baseline to run live sonar:
- Screen Size: Minimum 9-inch display. A 12-inch display is optimal for reading target separation at a 25-meter range in dirty water.
- Power Supply: Run a dedicated 12V Lithium-ion battery (minimum 50Ah) strictly for the sonar unit. Do not wire it to your cranking battery.
- Mounting: Mount the transducer to an independent pole, not the electric motor shaft. This allows you to scan 360 degrees while the electric motor is locked on GPS anchor mode (“Spot-Lock”).
[ 03. DEPLOYMENT & THE STRIKE TRIGGER ]
Finding the fish is only half the battle. Presenting the lure without spooking them is where most fishos fail.
- Scan the Zone: Set your forward range to 25 meters. Keep your depth set to 1 meter below the actual bottom. Scan submerged timber for large, single returns suspended off the bottom.
- The Cast: Do not cast directly at the fish. The splash will shut them down. Cast 5 meters past the target fish.
- The Sink: Let your soft plastic or swimbait sink until it is at the exact depth of the fish on your screen.
- The Trigger: Retrieve the lure smoothly across the face of the fish. If the fish follows the lure but does not bite, stop winding. Let the lure pause and sink for two seconds. This mimics a dying baitfish and triggers a violent reaction strike.
[ 04. CONSERVATION MANDATE ]
Because you will locate and catch fish faster with this tech, you must prioritize their survival. Crush all barbs on your hooks to allow for instant removal. If targeting deep-water species, carry a release weight to combat barotrauma.
